Government MDA’s

 

The Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency is the apex regulatory and promotional maritime agency. Created from the merger of National Maritime Authority (NMA) and Joint Maritime Labour Industrial Council (JOMALIC) (both former parastatals of Federal Ministry of Transport) on 1st August 2006, the obligation of regulating the maritime industry in Nigeria rest on the agency.

The Lagos State Government in 2008 enacted the Lagos State Waterways Authority Law which established the Lagos Waterways Authority (LASWA).

LASWA is charged with the responsibility of coordinating and managing the reforms necessary for the long term growth and development of water transportation in Lagos state. Its mandate includes the granting of ferry licenses, and concessions for the operation of terminals to the private sector. The National Inland Waterways Authority NIWA hitherto Inland waterways Department (IWD) of the federal Ministry of Transport metamorphosed into an authority vide an act of the national assembly cap 47, laws of the federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004 Decree No 13 of 1997) established with the primary responsibility to improve and develop Nigeria inland waterways for navigation.
