Nigeria's extensive network of inland waterways serves millions of people daily. From Lagos lagoons to the Niger-Benue river system, from Cross River to the creeks of the Niger Delta, waterways are lifelines for transportation and commerce. Yet preventable accidents continue to claim lives. Overloaded boats, lack of life jackets, night-time travel without proper lighting, and inadequate safety training create daily risks for commuters, traders, and entire communities.
Our Programme and Initiatives

SWAAADO was founded by concerned maritime safety advocates, community leaders, and development professionals. The NGO emerged from a shared conviction that the preventable loss of life on Nigeria's waterways must end and
SWAAADO's programs address the multi-faceted nature of waterway safety, from grassroots education to policy advocacy. Each initiative is designed to create sustainable change.

SWAAADO is people powered. Our team is made up of volunteers and staff who believe in what SWAAADO stands for; making our waterways and its entire ecosystem sustainable. They drive engagements with our partners including federal and state governments' agencies to strengthen safety regulations, improve enforcement mechanisms and close policy gaps that compromise waterway safety.
